Rare Record Collector

Formed in late 1969 by parent company Philips Records, Vertigo was the brainchild of founder Olav Wyper to compete with other major labels’ subsidiary labels such as EMI’s Harvest and Decca’s Deram offshoots. Relatively short-lived in its initial format (1969-1973 as Vertigo ‘Swirl’), the label is still active today as part of Universal Music Group.

Despite the relative success of artists like Rod Stewart, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, the vast majority of Vertigo releases suffered from dreadful sales figures and so disappeared into obscurity.

Thanks to this lack of success at the time, these original UK released Vertigo ‘Swirls’ (as they have generally become known) are now amongst the most desirable and prized vinyl LPs sought by collectors worldwide today.

Even though many Vertigo Swirls ‘flopped’ upon release, several secured moderate or even excellent sales success and were subsequently reissued during the lifespan of the Vertigo Swirl label.
