Vertigo Swirl Singles

6059-001-(V1)-demo-A

Vertigo founded in 1969 yet did not release its first single until February 1970. It began with a catalogue numbering system of V1 (presumably to echo the LP VO1 numbering system) and added a secondary numbering system of 6059 001. The V prefix only lasted for two singles and the ‘6059’ system was adopted throughout the rest of the swirl releases up to 1973. There were some anomalies with numbering (echoing some LP releases) that utilised different numbering, e.g. Rod Stewart, Lighthouse, Jim Croce, Aphrodite’s Child.

A significant chunk of the ‘6059’ series were unissued in the UK:

6059 004, 6059 005, 6059 006
6059 014
6059 016, 6059 017
6059 019, 6059 020
6059 022, 6059 023, 6059 024, 6059 025
6059 028
6059 030, 6059 031, 6059 032, 6059 033
6059 037, 6059 038, 6059 039, 6059 040
6059 045, 6059 046, 6059 047
6059 050
6059 052
6059 054, 6059 055, 6059 056, 6059 057, 6059 058, 6059 059
6059 062, 6059 063, 6059 064, 6059 065, 6059 066, 6059 067
6059 072

One must assume that planned releases for these catalogue numbers were either issued the non 6059 numbers or maybe even released on Philips’ other labels, e.g. Mercury, Philips, Fontana etc…(although, as with some of the unissued LP numbers, several of these were issued by non-UK countries).
