Founded as an offshoot of B&C Records, Pegasus was a very short-lived concept lasting just two years. In that time it signed or licensed an eclectic mix of progressive rock and folk artists, even undergoing a complete name change and label redesign, as a result of an impending legal action.

Several of the signings were mere one-release-wonders who sold miniscule quantities of their albums and never released anything again, disappearing into obscurity and ensuring future rarity, collectability and with prices to match.

Other artists, notably Nazareth, Steeleye Span and Martin Carthy were both successful and prolific. But even relative success at the time could not secure the future of Pegasus (and Peg Records, as it became). The parent company, B&C, was in financial crisis and Peg Records was one of the eventual casualties, closing for good at the end of 1972. 

A pre-existing manufacturing, marketing and distribution deal with Charisma Records saw Charisma’s publishing company, Mooncrest, become a record label in its own right and sweep up the remaining Peg roster in 1973.

Several examples of the back catalogue were immediately reissued on the new Mooncrest label, but the majority were consigned to history, never to be reissued and ensuring ‘hard-to-find’ status amongst fervent record collectors. 

Whilst not enjoying the ‘legendary’ status one might associate with other collectable labels (such as Vertigo swirl or Neon, perhaps) there are still some gems to be collected, particularly in the all important ‘near mint’ or ‘unplayed’ categories.
